Trump had an intense early morning on social media this Tuesday, more specifically on his property, Truth Social. There, in the run-up to the Davos Summit, he gave free rein to his arrogance, reaffirmed his desire to take over Greenland and battered his European allies.
To make it clear, one of the posts shows an image made with AI in which he appears with his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and his Vice President JD Vance planting a United States flag on Greenland. In previous messages he reiterated his intention to take possession of Greenland as “imperative for national and global security”, stating that “there can be no turning back” while in the post made with AI it is mentioned that Greenland will be “US territory by 2026”
In another post he attacked the United Kingdom, mockingly calling it a “brilliant” ally, for its plan to hand over the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, and using that example to reinforce the idea that in the face of the “defection” of its NATO partners, it has no choice but to take over Greenland.
In another post, he leaked private text messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO President Mark Rutte, in which they discuss their latest political decisions.
In the case of Macron’s leaked message, he seeks to make a fool of the French president who had said that Europe should respond with a “trade bazooka” to the provocations and the threat of US tariffs. In the leaked message, however, you can read Macron “extending his hand” and not once but twice inviting the American president to a cordial meeting in France before he returns to the United States.

Trump had just threatened France with 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne over Macron’s refusal to join the Gaza “peace board”, and also mocked the French pre-president by saying that “no one wants him because he will leave office very soon.”
All this happened before mid-morning in Europe and when the Davos Summit began, showing the level of disruption it generates in the world and the historical crisis of relations between the United States and Europe to which American imperialist arrogance leads, with Trump in charge of a hegemonic power in decline that permanently increases its level of hostility.
In advance of these provocations, Trump threatened eight European allies on Saturday and threatened with 10% tariffs if an agreement is not reached on Greenland, while he published a message addressed to the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, where he assured that because he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize he no longer feels the “obligation to think only about peace” and that he will now think “about what is good and appropriate for the United States of America.” America.”
The dispute over Greenland and the crisis with Europe
Last week, Reuters reported that the White House was considering paying between $10,000 and $100,000 per Greenlandic resident to purchase the island. American pressure was also directed at European leaders, particularly with the threat to cut off American military support to Ukraine.
As we pointed out in a recent article on our French site, RĂ©volution Permanente, Donald Trump covets Greenland because this Arctic territory is strategically important for US imperialism. Trump declared on Wednesday, January 14, that “the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons. It is vital to the Golden Dome.” [el proyecto de defensa antimisiles destinado, entre otras cosas, a interceptar misiles de Eurasia] that we are building.”
As a Danish colony, Greenland occupies a strategic position that would allow the United States to strengthen its control over the sea routes that cross the Arctic. Beyond these geopolitical and military issues, Greenland is rich in important mineral resources, the vast majority of which are currently unexploited, but which Trump would like to seize.
For their part, Europeans are not willing to abandon a colony that has been in Danish hands for three hundred years. Since last week, European Union leaders have been on high alert and have announced a military exercise, “Arctic Resistance,” mobilizing Danish, French, German, British, Dutch, Norwegian and Swedish soldiers, and expected to last “a year, maybe two,” with “different capabilities” and the deployment of “special forces,” according to an interview with a Danish general in The World.
The other lever that Europeans could activate lies in the economic sphere: the International Cooperation Agreement (ICA), the anti-coercion tool, presented as “Europe’s economic bazooka”, allows a significant increase in tariffs against another country, the blocking of its investments in Europe and the exclusion of said country from public procurement markets; in other words, the severing of most economic ties with a potential adversary. This mechanism theoretically works as a deterrent. It was already being discussed in the summer of 2025, before the agreement reached between Trump and von der Leyen.
European nervousness reflects Trump’s ambition. Like the United States, imperialist countries have a particular interest in preserving strategic territories like Greenland. Trump’s threat is reviving various fears, particularly regarding Ukraine and, in particular, in the case of France. France fears becoming militarily weak to the point of being unable to defend its colonies. This was one of the justifications for rearmament advocated by the July 2025 National Strategic Review, which referred to “questioning by certain countries of security partnership offers from the West, including France.”
Trump’s foreign policy could pose a threat to French colonial interests, especially in Latin America. Because if Trump argues that Latin America should belong exclusively to the United States and that no other power should have a presence there, this raises the possible question of French positions in French Guiana and the Caribbean. For this reason, among European leaders, Macron actively advocates the use of the anti-coercion mechanism, since the French bourgeoisie is one of the European ruling classes with the most to lose in this new wave of inter-imperialist rivalries. If Macron is extremely accommodating to Trump on Venezuela or Iran, French foreign policy could clash with that of the United States regarding its colonial policy.
The leak this Tuesday by Trump of Macron’s complacent message pointing out the agreements in Syria and Iran and inviting him to a bilateral meeting, seeks to expose the fears of the French president and generate disagreements within Europe.
Faced with this situation of rivalry between imperialisms in decline—be it the American superpower or the European imperialist powers, and above all our own imperialism, which aspires to preserve its colonies scattered on the five continents—the organizations that are part of the Revolutionary Current permanently refuse to defend the ambitions of one imperialism over another. We denounce the plans to confiscate Greenland’s resources, promoted by Donald Trump, as well as the belligerent escalation of Europeans who want to preserve the Danish colony and are using the situation to promote their militarist agenda. Workers will be the first to pay the price of trade or military rivalries, while the escalation of the trade war can only result in further exploitation, justified by the rhetoric of national defense, whose main objective is to protect the interests of our ruling classes.
As anti-imperialists and internationalists, we declare our unconditional solidarity with the struggle for self-determination of the communities of Greenland, where more than 80% of the population rejects annexation by the United States and 56% demands independence from Denmark. Only the construction of an anti-war and anti-imperialist front at the international level can frustrate the plans of the imperialists on both sides, which are leading us to an escalation of war, colonialism and destruction such as has not been seen in decades.
