White House intensifies attempted intervention in American cities governed by rivals and wants to put 300 soldiers on the streets of Chicago. Justice blocks military shipping to Portland.
President Donald Trump’s government advances in his campaign to mobilize the National Guard in American cities as a way to protect federal officials and buildings against protesters against White House migratory policies.
After suggesting that the country faces an “internal war”, Trump ordered the sending of 300 National Guard soldiers to Chicago in Illinois, a measure defended by US internal security secretary Kristi Noem on Sunday (05/10). In an interview with Fox News, Noem stated that the city is a “war zone” and therefore requires federal intervention.
Trump’s ally in the House of Representatives, Deputy Mike Johnson echoed rhetoric on Sunday, and argued that Chicago became a “true war zone.”
Already Governor of Illinois, Democrat JB Pritzker, accused Trump of wanting to “create a war zone and then be able to send even more troops.” In the city, protesters entered several clashes with federal agents due to the increase in immigrant arrests.
In a statement, the governor called the decision “The Invasion of Trump”, saying that there is no reason to send troops without dialogue with local authorities.
The movement is similar to the measure imposed by Trump to Washington DC and other municipalities. Since the beginning of his second term, he sent or spoke of sending troops to ten cities, including Baltimore (Maryland), Memphis (Tennessee), New Orleans (Louisiana) and the Californian cities of Oakland, St. Francis and Los Angeles.

The US President also tried to mobilize officers from other states to Portland in Oregon to protect a building from the Customs Immigration and Control Service (ICE), but the movement was barred by the court also on Sunday.
On Saturday, a federal judge had already suspended the order of military personnel in Oregon to Portland. At the time, magistrate Karin Immergut disregarded comments from the White House that the city would be “devastated by war” and said that “the president’s determination was simply no basis of facts.”
“This is a country of constitutional laws, not martial law,” wrote Immergut in his decision.
Although Portland registered attacks against federal properties, the Trump government has not been able to demonstrate “that these episodes of violence are part of an organized attempt to overthrow the government as a whole”, a justification necessary to use military force, she said.
Tension in Chicago
The White House movement is a reaction to the clashes registered between ICE agents in its offensive antimigration and protesters.
ICE operations across the country, which occur mainly in cities governed by Democrats, have resulted in images where masked and armed men advance against residents aggressively.

Since the beginning of the month, the voltage has gained higher proportions in Chicago, where ICE agents have been arrested in areas with large presence of immigrants, largely Latin.
Protesters gathered near an immigration installation outside the city, and 13 people were arrested. On Saturday, the Department of Internal Security (DHS) acknowledged that Ice agents shot an American woman, who, according to authorities, would have played the car at one of the patrol vehicles.
Defenders of the rights of immigrants and residents reported that federal agents used tear gas near markets and stores aimed at actions in other parts of Chicago and detained a councilwoman while she questioned a man’s attempt to arrest.
A CBS network released on Sunday showed that 58% of Americans are against the sending of the National Guard to the cities.
