Donald Trump’s administration decided to withhold US$26 billion that were scheduled to be sent to states governed by Democrats, in a measure announced this Wednesday (1), during the 15th shutdown in the history of the United States. The blocking of resources is due to the lack of a budget agreement in Congress, which led to the shutdown of part of the federal government.
Of these resources, US$18 billion was destined for transportation projects in New York and US$8 billion would be invested in clean energy programs in the states of California, Illinois and others under the command of the opposition party. The measure deepens tension between Trump and Democrats, who accuse the president of using the budget as a political instrument.
The current shutdown has suspended operations in several federal agencies, interrupting scientific research, environmental inspection and several public services considered “non-essential”. The United States has instructed around 750,000 federal employees to temporarily interrupt their activities, while military personnel and border agents continue working without immediate guarantee of payment. Vice President JD Vance even stated that layoffs could occur if the strike lasts for several days.
On the Truth Social platform, Trump stated that the shutdown offers an opportunity to “eliminate stagnation, waste and fraud” and said that “billions of dollars can be saved”. This rhetoric reinforces the president’s commitment to holding Democrats responsible for the budget impasse, while resisting concessions that could weaken his political base.
