The meeting between the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, at Mar-a-Lago concludes. Without further relevant news or details, Trump has assured that they have “made a lot of progress” and that they are “close” to a definitive agreement for peace in Ukraine. “Some will say that [el progreso es de] 95%, I don’t know what percentage, but we have made a lot of progress to end this war,” Trump added.

After their almost three-hour meeting this Sunday, the president acknowledged differences over the future status of Donbas. “It is a very difficult issue but I think we will resolve it,” he assured, adding again that they are “getting closer” on this matter. In this sense, Zelensky added that Ukrainians have to respect their land and their people, as well as the territory they control. The country’s attitude towards this area, he says, is “very clear” and its position on the matter is “different” from that of Russia.

Asked about how long it could take to end the war, they preferred not to specify, although Trump has assured that it is possible that it could be “a few weeks.” Precisely, the two presidents have indicated that in the coming weeks the negotiating teams will meet again to advance the talks. In addition, Zelensky indicated that he would possibly meet with European leaders.

Regarding a possible referendum in Ukraine to vote on a peace plan, Zelensky has assured that Ukrainian citizens “have the right to this”, as well as that they will need infrastructure to be able to carry it out.

Today’s meeting between the two leaders comes after Zelensky held a telephone conversation on Thursday with White House emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with whom he discussed some “new ideas” on how to achieve peace in Ukraine, in terms of formats, meetings and the roadmap for the talks. Moments before the meeting, Trump also had a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin, which he described as “very positive and productive.”
