Under a miserable speech, Donald Trump escalates the imperialist aggression against Venezuela. This time, he has cynically declared on his social network Truth Social that “Due to the theft of our assets and many other reasons, including terrorism, drug trafficking and human trafficking, the Venezuelan regime has been designated as a FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION”, when in truth they are the ones who have plundered and stolen Venezuelan oil for more than a century.
The post goes on to say “Therefore, today I order a total and complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela,” in a clear escalation from the hijacking of a Venezuelan oil tanker last week, a true act of piracy in the 21st century.
According to the New York Timesthe announcement was in a “bellicose” tone. That one of the main spokespersons for Yankee imperialism has to say that is an example of how terrible the situation is. The move occurs at a time of full growth of US interference in the region, which seeks to discipline its historical backyard and force a regime change in Venezuela.
The tycoon did not specify what he means by “sanctioned” ship, so he is virtually imposing a total commercial blockade. The blockade of the main exploitation of the Caribbean country can only impact the already degraded living conditions of the Venezuelan working population, while Maduro and his allies will be able to continue enjoying their privileges.
The issue of “terrorism” adds to the previous excuse of the “war on drugs” with which Trump has already murdered at least 95 people in around 25 attacks in the Caribbean Sea, an issue that generated strong criticism in his own country, both of him and his Secretary of Defense, Peter Hegseth.
With this aggression against Venezuela they seek to “discipline” and intimidate the entire region, as part of their hemispheric control, with which they intend, among other things, to guarantee privileged and unlimited access for the United States and its corporations to rare energy and mineral resources, within the framework of the aggressive extractivism that is part of global disputes.
That is why it is so important to repudiate these US advances but without providing any support to Maduro, who uses the excuse of the attacks to reinforce internal repression in Venezuela.
As the declaration of the Trotskyist Fraction, which promotes the International Network La Izquierda Diario, says: We promote the broadest unity of anti-imperialist action while pointing out that the defeat of imperialism and the local bourgeoisies, including the capitalist regime of Maduro, can only come from the unity of the working class and the oppressed of the continent in the struggle for governments of the workers and the poor people as part of a Socialist Federation of Latin America and the Caribbean.
