New US President Donald Trump announces a $500 billion AI infrastructure fund. The fund will be called “Stargate” and the goal is to build data centers for artificial intelligence throughout the country.
Who is participating?
Big names participate in the fund. Including OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, but also SoftBank and Oracle. In total, the project should create 100,000 new jobs in the United States.
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said that 100 million dollars would immediately be invested in the project.
AI investment firm MGX is also involved, while Microsoft, Nvidia and Arm are also listed as tech partners. According to a statement from OpenAI, the remaining $400 billion will be distributed over the next four years.
The idea behind this is probably that they want to see, based on the performance of companies, who should get the largest share of that amount.
“What we want to do is keep innovation in AI in this country,” Trump said, flanked by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Larry Ellison of Oracle and Son of SoftBank.
China is a competitor
“China is a competitor, other countries are competitors. We want AI to be produced in this country, and we are making that possible,” Trump said about the plans for the future in the United States in the field of AI.
It is striking that Trump is openly seeking cooperation with OpenAI, because Elon Musk has clashed with the company in the past because of CEO Sam Altman, who, according to him, has too much in it for the money.
OpenAI indicates that Stargate data centers are already being built in Texas. It would also evaluate potential other locations.
“This project will support not only the re-industrialization of the United States, but also the strategic capacity to protect the national security of America and its allies,” OpenAI added.
