The PP of Alberto Núñez Feijóo has once again accused the Government of wanting to manipulate the elections. He did it before the 2023 general elections or, more recently, during the Extremadura elections last December. Feijóo himself pointed out Pedro Sánchez for supposedly using the INE, Indra and Correos to change votes. And he has reiterated this on account of the regularization of undocumented migrants who already live and work in Spain. The opposition has maintained that one of the reasons for the measure is to “fatten” the census to modify the next elections. A false statement that they have now assumed as such.
This was done by the Deputy Secretary of Sector Coordination, Alma Ezcurra, during an interview on RNE. Although not at the first time. The MEP has also maintained that “this massive and uncontrolled regularization, once people acquire legal residence, if their country has an agreement [con España] They can participate in the municipal elections.” Ezcurra added: “But I tell you more, if you belong to Latin America, the Philippines or Equatorial Guinea, you will be able to apply for nationality in just two years, which will allow you to participate in all the elections.”
“It is not debatable,” Ezcurra stated. “With the law in hand, and if one knows how to read and count, one knows that this can be like this,” he stated, to ensure that, in his opinion, the Government has approved the procedure due to “political clientelism.”
The journalist asked: “Have you calculated the percentage of people who can vote in [las elecciones del] 27 to justify this fattening of the census with the intention of extracting votes?
It was then that Ezcurra recognized that the regularization will not affect the current electoral cycle in any case. “It seems to me that it is important to specify the times,” he began. “We have said in the medium term. In the short term, no,” he assumed.
Ezcurra continued with his usual tone. “If one knows how to read and count, the agreements depending on the country establish a criterion of between three and five years” to be able to vote in the country of residence, he explained. “Therefore, in the next municipal elections this census is not going to gain weight. It will gain weight in the following ones, when they occur,” he acknowledged.
That is, the theoretical modification of the census for municipal elections would not be valid until 2031.
And for the generals? Ezcurra has explained it this way on RNE. “As for nationalization, it would take two years” until it is achieved. And that, in the simplest case, that of those countries with a past relationship with Spain.
Because, furthermore, having residency is not the only requirement to achieve nationality. There are many more. And not for all applicants the minimum period is two years: the norm is ten years of legal, continuous residence immediately prior to the request, with exceptions such as refugee status, for example. To this temporary requirement we should also add the delay of the administration in resolving the file. And, in any case, many migrants with residence do not ask for Spanish nationality because, in most cases, it implies renouncing their nationality of origin.
Ezcurra has ironically said that Sánchez will not have time to use this supposed gain from the census. “Sánchez wants to exhaust the legislature, I don’t know if he will be able to go beyond what is legally his responsibility,” he said.
