It is a political scenario characterized by a general turn to the right, but also to the left, by the unexpected ascent – between Die Linke’s youth.

The electoral result does not seem to bring great surprises regarding the latest surveys. The Government, headed by the Social Democracy (SPD), was punished and for this time is going third with 16.4% and 12 seats in Parliament. While the FDP (Free Democratic Party, of the Liberal Right) of the former Minister of Finance, Christian Lindner, -which was part of the Government until November 2024, when he resigned -, he is not exceeding the 5% floor to enter Bundestag.

The result represents a sharp displacement to the right. The CDU/CSU, directed by Merz and the AFD have not only managed to gain ground, but the AFD has even won more than 9 percentage points. The so -called Union Party (CDU/CSU) in particular is now much more to the right in its program than in the last elections. But the strong result of Die Linke expresses a certain polarization.

630 Total benches · 153 of 299 electoral districts finished counting- results 23 hours (Germany):

In his first speech, Friedrich Merz thanked the Union Party almost effusively. But it has virtually no support among young people. In this age group, it obtains a little 13%, only 1% percent ahead of the SPD and the greens. The latter have reduced their results compared to 2021. The FDP, which had also obtained good results among young people in 2021, currently only 6% of voters between 18 and 24 years supported him.

Die Linke is the most voted force among young people aged 18 to 24 with 25%. The AFD follows with 20%. This confirms that Die Linke’s renewed boom is a youth phenomenon. Polarization is as present among young voters as among the general population. However, however, among the youth the inclination to the left is much stronger. A movement against the social attacks of the incoming government will have to rely on this sector and take out its strength from self -organization in schools and universities.
