After several months of low profile, Mauricio Macri reappeared publicly this Thursday. He did so by leading a PRO event in the Arenas Studioslocated in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca, where he wanted to give the image of a relaunch of his political force. #NuevoPRO was the trend that his supporters dedicated themselves to installing on social networks, although he has little or nothing new. If one looks at the photo, one can see that he was accompanied from the stage by María Eugenia Vidal, Cristian Ritondo, his cousin Jorge Macri and Guillermo Montenegro, among others. The most novel fact was the absences: neither of the two presidential candidates that the PRO had last year were present, with Bullrich completely integrated into the libertarian government and Larreta removed – at least for now – from the decisions of the space.

Beyond the presence of repeated faces and the forced attempt to present the event as if it were a renovation of the space created in 2005, The mere reappearance of the former president is a political fact in itself.

“President has proposed a merger to us and, because of the relationship of mutual affection, I told him that in the 21st century nobody gets married without knowing each other and living together. In reality, I told him in a clearer and more correct way” said Macri, referring to the meeting they had 72 hours earlier at the Quinta de Olivos. The response sets the tone that the PRO has handled until now, collaborating in everything necessary with the Government such as in the approval of the Ley Bases but, at the same time, seeking to differentiate itself and maintain its own political space as an alternative right-wing option to Freedom Advances.

From that uncomfortable place in which Macri’s government was placed after Milei’s victory, Macri now seeks to raise his profile. “The President has absolute clarity in the direction and ideas” he affirmed during his speech, but at the same time he was careful to emphasize that he has “a weakness in the capacity to implement them” and that he still “has the pending challenge of building a team.” In that context, he praised the “management” capacity and the “experience” of his political force and emphasized: “We were not, nor are we.” an experiment. We are a party prepared to execute ideas, to put proposals into action in an organized manner.”

At that time, he also took the opportunity to point out the small table that surrounds the president and that is made up of Karina Milei and Santiago Caputo. “Despite the enormous openness and the genuine will to add that the President has, What we were able to help was despite their surroundings“. And he added: “The changes require a reengineering that takes time and Today time weighsArgentines want more changes and faster.”

Marking time

The reappearance of Macri is a political fact in itself and, to top it off, it is accompanied by another such as the reappearance of Cristina Kirchner who will speak this Saturday in a master class organized by the National Institute of Political Training (INFP) of Morena (López Obrador’s party), located in Mexico City.

There are several facts that help explain this change. On the one hand, it must be considered that, after eight months, Milei’s “honeymoon” is beginning to wear off. The social and economic indicators are truly alarming and the surveys and opinion polls to which the government usually pays a lot of attention are beginning to show important concerns such as unemployment (a product of the recession), as well as a decline in the presidential image. On the other hand, the evident weakness of the Government is a driving force for forces outside the government, even though they strive to support it, thinking about next year’s elections.

In this context, Macri is preparing himself. If Milei manages to reach the legislative elections in good shape, he will try to negotiate what he can and will try to convince people about the fundamental nature of his contribution to achieve the objectives that the Government would not have been able to achieve on its own. On the other hand, if the Government fails in its objectives, he will be waiting for the moment to harden his criticisms in order to separate himself more clearly and be able to capitalize on it for his political strength.

In any case, the only thing that seems clear is that the reappearance of Macri (and that of CFK) shows that despite the chainsaw, the adjustment and the Mileistic refoundational narrativethe “new Argentina” that the inner circle and the government were so enthusiastic about has not yet come into being. The words of the magnate Paolo Rocca, who said that “perhaps we were all too optimistic in believing that the situation in Argentina could be resolved in the short term,” are the clearest example of this.

Time and social patience are scarce goods and in this context, the old does not die either.
