Arrest and charges
Durov’s legal problems started in August 2024, when he was arrested at Le Bourget Airport in Paris. French prosecutors accused him of exploiting a platform that makes illegal activities possible. On August 28, provisional charges were announced, which stated that Telegram could be involved in uncontrolled financial transactions – a risk that according to the prosecutors will endanger financial stability.
After payment of a $ 6 million deposit, Durov was released, but he was not allowed to leave France as long as the investigation was ongoing. The sudden permission to leave the country suggests that the case has since been resolved or that he was allowed to leave under certain conditions.
