STF ministers want the Lula government to react to US sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes, pointed out as an attempt to interference with the judiciary
Ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) consider that the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) should speak out in the face of the United States threats to impose sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Four magistrates heard from the column of Malu Gaspar, to Globo, argued that the Brazilian government makes it clear to the government of Donald Trump that “it is not for the US to intervene in the judiciary of another country.”
This is not the first time members of the Supreme Court have charged a reaction from the Planalto to attacks by US authorities against Moraes. About three months ago, the ministers had already demanded a position after the attacks by billionaire Elon Musk, owner of social network X (former Twitter), to the magistrate. For months, Itamaraty diplomats have tried to explain to US representatives the role of the STF in Brazilian democracy.
USA evaluate sanctions against Moraes
As revealed by columnist Malu Gaspar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump government “studies implementing sanctions against Moraes.” The statement was given during a statement at the US Congress Foreign Commission on Wednesday (21).
When questioned by Republican Deputy Corry Mills of Florida, about the possibility of sanctions, Rubio replied:
– “This is under analysis at the moment and there is a great possibility that this happens.”
Eduardo Bolsonaro celebrates and STF reaffirms posture
Licensed federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who is in the United States articulating with Trump’s republican congressmen and allies, celebrated the statement: “We will win”.
In the Supreme Court, the ministers maintain the position that the court will not retreat in the face of external pressures. They claim that the magistrates will continue to perform their duties, including the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, defendant for attempted coup.
The possibility of US sanctions against an STF minister lights the debate on foreign interference in the Brazilian judiciary. While the Lula government has not yet officially commented, the Supreme Court shows resistance to any attempted international pressure.
