“Palestine bleeds before our eyes.” This has begun the president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, his speech this Saturday at the Summit of the League of Arab States this Saturday, in which he has announced that Spain will raise before the UN that the International Court of Justice (CIJ) declares whether the current Israeli block over the Gaza Strip fulfills international law.
“Nothing that is happening in Gaza and the West Bank can be oblivious to Europe and the rest of the world,” said the president, who has loaded against Israel’s military attacks to the strip and the humanitarian crisis suffered by the territory since October 2023. The conflict has already caused more than 52,000 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries. “These are unacceptable figures that not only violate any basic notion of the principle of humanity, but also violate the basic foundations of international law. We have to stop this spiral of violence,” the President of the Government insisted.
Sanchez has influenced the need for humanitarian aid to the strip in an urgent way. Israel keeps Gaza under a total blockade of humanitarian aid and cooperators have noticed for months that food, water, medicines and fuel are running out. “We are going to demand from Israel the end of the humanitarian block imposed on Gaza and full access and without restrictions on humanitarian assistance, based on the principles of impartiality, independence and neutrality, and the most relevant, under the coordination of the United Nations,” he reiterated.
In this context, from the Summit of the Arab League that is held this Saturday in Baghdad (Iraq) and the one that Sanchez has come as a guest, the president of the Spanish Government has specifically announced that “Spain will take a proposal to the United Nations Assembly for the CIJ pronounced on the compliance by Israel of its international obligations in relation to the access of humanitarian aid to Gaza”. The proposal, he added, intends to “redouble the pressure on Israel to stop the massacre in Gaza, especially through the roads that international law gives us.”
Sánchez advocates greater collaboration with the Arab states
The president of the Government has assured that the priority of Spain is to move towards a political solution that ends with the conflict. “The only way towards peace in the region is the implementation of the solution of the two states,” he repeated. For this, Sánchez has highlighted the geopolitical importance of the Peace Conference to be held in June in New York, and has asked the leaders present to work together to take advantage of it. “Spain recognized the state of Palestine a year ago, and today I want to urge other countries to advance recognition,” he said. “The June conference, under the leadership of Saudi Arabia and also from France, represents a historical opportunity that we cannot miss. But it will only succeed if there is a broad Arab and European consensus that culminates in a determined action of the whole of the international community.”
The executive leader has concluded his speech with a request to the Arab League for greater collaboration: “If the European Union and the Arab League work together, with strong leadership, we will be an engine like no other to solve the problems of the region. We have to reinforce that collaboration, guaranteeing that international standards apply to all equally, without ambiguities, without double standards, and in that sense Spain is committed to doing everything in our hand. ”
