Spain exceeds for the first time the 22 million employed, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA) of the second quarter of the year, published this Thursday. In total, from April to June, 22,270,000 people had worked and the unemployment rate fell to 10.29%, the lowest figure since 2008 and one point less than in the latest survey of the National Statistics Institute. “They are very positive data, especially when the active population continues to increase, to 24.8 million, the highest figure in the series,” said Economy Minister Carlos Corpora. There are 267,200 people more than the previous quarter.

The second quarter of the year is, in general, positive for employment, animated by the good weather and the beginning of hiring for the summer season. In addition, on this occasion, unlike what happened in 2024, Holy Week was held in April, which is an extra push for the incorporation of more people working in the labor market. In total, the labor market has added in the last quarter more than half a million working people (503,300) compared to the previous three months and 584,000 in interannual terms.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute, the occupation rate reached its historical maximum in this period, with 68.3% of the employed population. “I said that we would become the Spain of the 22 million employed and today this data is so,” said the second vice president of the Government and Labor Minister, Yolanda Díaz, who has stressed that “virtually all the data of this EPA” are “a very positive news for our country.”

In this sense, both Díaz and body have emphasized the active population, which approaches 25 million people. In this quarter, it is an increase of 267,300 people, the second highest increase, after 2021, since 2005.

236,000 unemployed less

On the part of the strike, it has marked the minimum of the last 17 years, with a 10.29% rate and. In total, there are 2,553,100 people, with eight autonomous communities below the double digit: Aragon (7.6%), Asturias (8.6%), Balears (7.4%), Cantabria (7.1%), Castilla y León (8.5%), Catalunya (8.1%), Galicia (8.3%) and Madrid (7.7%).

In the last quarter, there have been 236,100 less unemployed with respect to the previous quarter. The data is positive compared to previous exercises and, with the exception of the 2023 record, when there was a reduction of 378,100 unemployed in this same period, it is the highest data since 2018, even before the pandemic.
