Michael Alexander Gloss, 21, who died on April 4, 2024, was the son of the high -ranked American spy Juliana Galina
An American man identified as the son of a CIA deputy director was killed in eastern Ukraine in 2024 while fighting under the Russian army, according to an independent Russian media investigation.
Michael Alexander Gloss, 21, died on April 4, 2024 in “Eastern Europe”, according to the obituary published by his family. He was the son of Juliane Gallina, appointed deputy director of digital innovation at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in February 2024.
The story of how the son of a high -ranking American spy died struggling for Ukraine’s large -scale invasion of Vladimir Putin is an unlikely story of how internal anger against the United States and online radicalization took from an middle -class childhood childhood to East Ukraine extermination camps.
On a Vkontakte page attributed to Gloss, a high school football player, the son of parents who served in the Armed Forces, he described himself as “an advocate of the multipolar world. I fled from home. I traveled around the world. I hate fascism. I love my homeland.” He also posted the flags of Russia and Palestine.
According to the Investigative website Stories, Gloss is one of the more than 1,500 foreigners who have signed contracts with the Russian Army since February 2022. The registration office database leaked later, exposing it as signed the contract in September 2023. Fontes told the status that Gloss had been highlighted with “robbery units”, those involved in hijacking lines on December in December of 2023. An acquaintance said he had been highlighted to a Russian aerotransported regiment sent to attack Ukrainian positions near the city of Soledar.
“With his noble heart and warrior spirit, Michael was walking his own hero journey when he was tragically killed in Eastern Europe on April 4, 2024,” his family wrote in the obituary, who did not mention Russia and Ukraine neither discussed the circumstances of his death.
At the university, Gloss was active in protest circles for gender equality and the environment. He joined Rainbow Family, a group of left -wing environmental protest, and in 2023 traveled to Hatay, Turkey, to help recovery after the earthquake that killed more than 56,000 people. He was also increasingly annoyed by the US for his support for Israel and the war in Gaza.
While in Türkiye, Gloss began to express the desire to go to Russia. “He used to watch videos about Palestine and was very angry with the United States,” an acquaintance told the Stories. “He started thinking about going to Russia. He wanted to get into war with the US. But I think he was very influenced by conspiracy theories videos.”
After receiving a visa to Russia, he traveled across the country before arriving in Moscow, where he enlisted in the army shortly before his documents expired. Photographs and videos obtained by Stories show that he was sent to a Russian training field, where he trained mainly alongside the contracted Nepalese soldiers. Three months after the enlistment, said one acquaintance, he was sent to Ukraine as a member of a Battalion of Assault.
Several acquaintances told the vehicle that he was not interested in fighting, but expected the army to allow him to receive a Russian passport and stay in the country.
The circumstances of Gloss’s death are unknown. A friend said his family had been informed by the Russian government about his death, but received little additional information. “It was announced that he died within the borders of Ukraine,” wrote the friend. “We don’t know if he participated in the war. They didn’t provide any other detailed information.”
It was unclear whether the Russians performed a gloss background check or knew their mother’s identity. The Guardian contacted the CIA for comments on the reports.
