Once again, Casa Marx, the cultural, political and social space promoted by the PTS in the Left Front in Trelew, came out this January 15 to defend the forests, the brigade members who fight on the front lines with the fires and the families who lost everything in the Andean Region. Likewise, a photo campaign was also promoted in solidarity with the Lustramax workers who face layoffs and the employers’ attempts to impose Milei’s slave labor reform.
Along with the bands “La Maquina de Cortar Césped”, “Laguna Negra”, “Tresientos Treinta y Tres” and “Fran Liberlucrecia” and the sound of Flaco Almendra, dozens of young people and workers began to gather at 8 p.m. who came to support this joint initiative between the musicians and Casa Marx to help the brigade members fighting on the front lines against the fires and the families who lost everything due to the forest fires.
In this historic city of the Lower Valley of the Chubut River, solidarity grows from below and in opposition to the policies of the governments responsible for this social ecocide that we have been witnessing since January 5 in Puerto Patriada, Epuyén and El Hoyo and since December in the Los Alerces National Park.
So the $300,000 pesos that were raised among the solidarity contributions was the manifestation that in Trelew the forest and the brigade members defend themselves.
Censorship attempt
When the solidarity festival was already in full swing, the government and the police wanted to prevent this activity from continuing. The solidarity and endurance of the artists and the more than 100 workers and young people who were part of this day prevented it.
Although it is not surprising, it is true that conservative and right-wing governments continue to try to prohibit solidarity activities. In this case, the attempt to censor the “Artists for the Cordillera” festival was promoted by the mayor of Trelew, Gerardo Merino, and the governor of Chubut, Ignacio Torres.
“The fire is contained, now I move on to the tourism business”
Against the speech of the provincial government that came out to announce that the fire is contained, that is, not extinguished, and already announces tax benefits for tourism companies, if you read correctly, tourism companies, and wants to turn the page on these forest fires, one of the worst in the last 20 years, which devastated more than 25,000 hectares of native forest and plantations of exotic plants, the pine, while negotiating with Santilli his support for the slave labor reform, the law of glaciers and the entire Milei plan in exchange for money, tries to prevent the continued expression of solidarity from below that developed like an inexhaustible torrent, contributing millions of pesos to the brigade members who are on the front line, to the volunteers and to the families.
Just to mention a few examples of this solidarity, María Becerra who contributed a sum of $6 million pesos to four brigades, trucks full of donations like the one that left from the Barrio Unión of Trelew or the $2 million that the PTS deputies in the Left Front contributed to four brigades. And so we could continue with countless examples.
For this reason, this political attack on Casa Marx de Trelew does not fall from the sky, it is part of a policy that tries to prevent and attack the right to fun and solidarity.
But against the speech and action of the right from the government, also at the other pole, smaller but firmer, the left is growing, which promotes other values, not only in speech but in deeds. That is why they wanted to censor the “Artists for the Cordillera” festival, because they hate the solidarity that grows from below and the emergence of a community of young people and workers who organize around Casa Marx with other values, and are willing to confront the policies of the governments.
“Casa Marx”, the Socialist Cultural House of Trelew, will continue to defend the right of workers and youth to a political, cultural and social space for meeting, debate, organization and enjoyment, promoted by the PTS.
Open to everyone and in solidarity with the struggles of workers, youth, pre-existing communities, women and dissidents and all those who fight. In times where it becomes increasingly more expensive to access and enjoy culture, we fight for art to be a tool of struggle and access for the entire working class.
