The president of the Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumpresented to the Congress two new legislative proposals aimed at reforming electoral laws and implementing a broad reform of the Judiciary, according to an official statement released by the government last Monday.
The proposals follow the approval of a constitutional reform by Congress in September, which mandates the popular election of all judges over the next three years.
The ruling Morena party and its allies, who support the reform, argue that the changes are essential to eliminate corruption within the judicial system.
“The judicial reform has already been approved, it is constitutional and, in a few days, after the approval of these two laws, the electoral process will begin,” said Sheinbaum during a morning press conference.
According to the government, the reforms aim to ensure transparency and effectiveness in the process of electing judges, judges and magistrates.
An election scheduled for June 1 will replace all Supreme Court justices, reducing the number of members from 11 to 9. The same election will also include votes for members of an electoral court and for half of the country’s magistrates and district judges.
Mexico’s Supreme Court recently voted to consider a constitutional challenge to judicial reform, with a decision pending on whether the reform compromises the independence of the courts.
The Court’s decision is eagerly awaited, as it may determine the next steps in implementing the reforms proposed by Sheinbaum.
