The American senator Elizabeth Warren is once again heard as a pronounced opponent of the crypto sector. Together with a group of fellow senators, she addressed a sharp letter to the attorney general, in which she fiercely takes the decision of the Ministry of Justice (DOJ) to terminate certain crypto-related investigations. According to Warren, that is a “serious error” with potentially dangerous consequences.
Free for criminals?
The Attorney General is the highest legal authority within the US Department of Justice and manages federal prosecutors. In her letter, Warren calls on to reconsider the decision and to combat criminal use of crypto currency again.
The reason for her criticism is to dissolve the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET)-a special part within the DOJ that focused on the criminal tackling of crypto-related crime. According to Warren and her colleagues, this decision opens the door for money laundering, drug crime, fraud and even child abuse.
The Ministry defended the change of course with a reference to other policy priorities, such as immigration and tender fraud. But according to the senators, this undermines the fight against financial crimes in the world of digital assets.
Worries about interests Trump
The letter also refers to a possible conflict of interest. Former president Donald Trump and his family are closely involved in several crypto projects. Just before his re -election campaign, Trump launched his own memecoin, something that has never been done before by an American president.
In addition, the Trump family would be indirectly involved in World Liberty Finance (WLFI)-a project that is reportedly investing millions in Bitcoin and various Altcoins.
According to Warren, the policy change within the Ministry of Justice may benefit Trump and his entourage, due to the reduced supervision of the cryptomarket. In the letter, the senators therefore warn serious risks:
“Criminals and opponents of the US will use this weakness on a large scale.”
