A shooting attack in Tumbler Ridge, in the northeast of the province of British Columbia, in Canada, left at least 10 dead and around 25 injured this Tuesday (10) after a man opened fire at a secondary school and a nearby residence, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The attack began at around 1:20 pm (local time) at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, which serves students from grades 7 to 12 in a remote community of about 2,400 people. Police teams were called immediately after reports of an active shooter at the location.
During the police response, agents entered the school and found several victims inside the building. At least six people were found dead inside the institution. Another person died while being transported to a hospital. Authorities also located two fatal victims in a nearby residence, which, according to police, may be linked to the episode. A third crime scene is being investigated.
RCMP said the suspect — initially described in a public alert as a woman wearing a dress and brown hair — was found dead at the school with an apparently self-inflicted wound, suggesting he took his own life during the attack. The identity of the suspect has not been released by authorities at this time.
About 25 people were taken to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment of injuries, most of which were considered non-life-threatening. Two victims with serious injuries were transported by helicopter to health facilities outside the city. All people remaining at the school, including students and staff, were safely evacuated, RCMP said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the tragedy by suspending a planned trip abroad and expressing “profound sadness” at the loss of life in what became one of the deadliest shootings in the country’s recent history. British Columbia Premier David Eby also expressed solidarity with the families and committed to providing support to the Tumbler Ridge community.
Mass shootings, especially at schools, are rare in Canada, a country with more restrictive firearms legislation than the United States. The local governor warned that it is still too early to determine the suspect’s motivation, and the investigation is ongoing under the coordination of the RCMP Major Crime Section and other specialized units.
Authorities are continuing to search other homes and properties in the area to check for additional injuries and establish any additional links to the shooter. The school is expected to remain closed for the remainder of the week, with psychological support services being made available to students, families and staff.
