The United States (US) is considering purchasing 500,000 Bitcoin (BTC) as a strategic reserve, according to Anthony Scaramucci. The plan, which is supported by incoming President Donald Trump and Senator Cynthia Lummis, was discussed in the Bankless podcast.
Bitcoin as a strategic weapon
Senator Cynthia Lummis has previously advocated for a national Bitcoin reserve of as much as 1 million BTC and is known for her pro-Bitcoin views. Scaramucci shares her vision and sees the development as crucial in the geopolitical competition. According to him, countries such as China have already amassed significant amounts of Bitcoin, putting pressure on the US to maintain its influence on global markets.
In the podcast, Scaramucci called Bitcoin “digital gold” and suggested that the US could potentially reallocate some of its existing gold reserves, worth more than $600 billion, to Bitcoin.
Broad political support
The plan appears to have broad support within the US Congress, especially among younger Democrats who are open to integrating Bitcoin into government finances. Senator Tim Scott, the incoming chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, will play a key role in advancing this proposal.
Additionally, growing support for recent crypto adoption legislation indicates that Bitcoin is increasingly recognized as a strategic asset by both Republicans and Democrats.
