OpenAi President Sam Altman said the Chinese artificial intelligence company Deepseek has done a “good job” in developing a chatbot that now rivals with chatgpt. The statement was made during an interview with The Times Tech Podcast, launched on Tuesday (11).
Altman confirmed that he intends to meet with Deepseek representatives, but said the meeting will not take place during Ai Action Summit, an event in Paris in which he participates this week.
The emergence of Deepseek, which has gained notoriety in the last month, has repercussions widely in the technology sector, even affecting the financial market.
The presentation of its chatbot, capable of equalizing or overcoming chatgPT in some areas, has resulted in a drop in actions by US technology companies.
According to industry information, Deepseek AI models were developed with a significantly lower investment compared to the billions of dollars applied by OpenAi. This has raised questions about the capacity of large US AI companies to stay leaders in a market that can become more competitive.
Altman commented that although the emergence of competitors is expected, he was surprised by the speed with which DeepSeek advanced. “The moment of the DeepSeek appearance took me by surprise, even if the appearance of a new challenger did not do that,” he said in the podcast.
DeepSek’s rise reflects China’s growing presence in the development of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, and reinforces the debate on global competitiveness in technological innovation.
The AI industry, dominated so far by US -based companies, now faces a new dynamic, with emerging players seeking space in a highly disputed market.
The attention is focused on the next movement of the American technology giants in response to Chinese competition. Analysts point out that Deepseek can establish new efficiency and cost-effective parameters in creating AI models, influencing investment strategies and development in the sector.
The meeting between Altman and DeepSeek executives has no date yet, but the meeting is expected to generate discussions about collaborations or strategic adjustments in the artificial intelligence scenario. Meanwhile, Ai Action Summit continues to bring together industry leaders to discuss advances, challenges and technology regulatory policies.
