The Kremlin has rejected the 30 -day truce proposed by Ukraine and several European leaders and has labeled “inadmissible” the threats of sanctions in case of not declaring the fire on Monday. “Ultimatum’s language is inadmissible. You can’t speak with Russia with that language,” said Dmitri Peskov, presidential spokesman, at his daily telephone press conference.
Vladimir Putin proposed on Sunday that both belligerent parties open direct contacts in Türkiye on Thursday to negotiate without the need to declare a high fire. Volodimir Zelenski later insisted on the need for a “complete and lasting” truce and said he will wait for Putin on Thursday in Türkiye. Zelenski’s message occurred after US President Donald Trump demanded kyiv to accept Putin’s proposal to start conversations in Istanbul.
The Kremlin has said to be focused on “serious” roads to achieve “long -term” peace with Ukraine but has not commented on Zelenski’s invitation to meet Putin personally. At the same time, Peskov has referred to the intervention of the Sunday of the Russian president in which he proposed to Ukraine to celebrate direct negotiations on May 15 in Istanbul “without any previous condition.” Regarding the question about the members of the Russian delegation that travels to the Turkish city and if it will include Putin, the Russian spokesman has not wanted to comment.
Asked by the Kyiv Independent if Zelenski plans to travel even if Russia does not support the truce or if Putin refuses to attend, a source close to the president has responded: “We are prepared for all options. But, of course, we expect an answer on the high fire.” Axios has also reported that the Ukrainian President will travel to Türkiye even if Moscow refuses to accept a truce beforehand.
Russia resists lowering weapons and has launched a total of 108 drones against Ukraine territory, despite the 30 -day truce that kyiv, Paris, London, Berlin and Warsaw wanted Kremlin to declare from this Monday. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 55 of the Shahed attack drones launched by Russia were demolished by the Ukrainian aerial defenses in the east, the north, the south and the center. 30 drones without explosive load fell without causing consequences. During the attack, the Russian drones caused damage to the Ukrainian regions of Odesa and Mikoláyiv, in the south of the country, and in those of Donetsk in the east and zhitomyr in the center.
The leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland demanded on Saturday from kyiv with the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, that the Kremlin declared as of this Monday a high unconditional fire by land, sea and air of 30 days that Ukraine also requires. The leaders who traveled to kyiv to send this message threatened the Russian president with sanctions if he did not access this proposal and said Trump supported this position.
The new German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has warned on Monday that if Russia is not willing to declare a durable fire in Ukraine that makes possible the beginning of peace conversations, Moscow must have more sanctions, as well as with the sending of more armament for Ukraine. In Berlin, in his first ordinary press conference, Stefan Kornelius, spokesman for the German government, has reiterated that “when it ends today, preparations for sanctions for sanctions at the level of the political advisors of the foreign affairs advisors will be launched”.
