With military maneuvers between Russia and the United States escalating in the Middle East and tensions rising between Iran and Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu visited Iran as the United States bolsters its military presence in the region.
Analysts stress the seriousness of the situation, with Iran and Israel threatening mutual attacks. However, neither Washington nor Moscow want an escalation, focusing on the crisis in Ukraine and domestic issues.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Russia-Iran cooperation in a multipolar world will promote global stability, declaring an end to the hegemony of the US and its allies, TASS reported. Shoigu’s visit aims to strengthen interactions and address regional and international security issues, ISNA reported.
Wang Jin, a professor at Northwest University, explained that Russia and Iran have deep military cooperation and a significant presence in the region. With the possibility of Iranian retaliation against Israel, coordination between the two countries is crucial.
The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is on its way to the Middle East to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt, with the US Navy sending reinforcements following “threats from Iran”, as announced by the Pentagon.
While the US is increasing its military presence, an open conflict between Israel and Iran is not in Washington’s interest. Liu Zhongmin, a professor at Shanghai University of International Studies, said both the US and Russia are avoiding another regional conflict, seeking to prevent escalation and minimize damage.
