The Russian government stated this Wednesday (4) that the United States used an “imaginary threat” attributed to Iran as justification for launching attacks with the aim of destabilizing the Iranian constitutional order. Moscow also criticized statements by American officials encouraging the Iranian population to take power in the country.

The accusation was made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova during a press conference in Moscow. According to her, the narrative about an alleged Iranian threat — reiterated by Washington over the years — served only as a pretext to implement a regime change plan in a sovereign state that “Washington and Tel Aviv do not like.”

Zakharova also stated that the United States had used diplomatic negotiations with Tehran until last week as a cover to hide its intention to promote an institutional rupture in the country. “There is no doubt that the invented Iranian threat was just a pretext to execute an old plan to violently overthrow the constitutional order of a sovereign state,” he declared.

Without mentioning American President Donald Trump by name, the diplomat made reference to statements that advocated for the Iranians to take control of the country. “It is even more cynical and inhumane to hear calls for the Iranians to seize power while the West literally rips their hands off them,” he said.

Russia maintains a strategic partnership treaty with Iran. President Vladimir Putin had already condemned what he classified as the “cynical assassination” of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei, killed on the first day of the offensive carried out by American and Israeli forces last Saturday.
