The President of the Parliament, Josep Rull, has proposed Salvador Illa as a candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat, after the socialist told him that he has enough votes to overcome an investiture debate. Rull has also proposed that this debate be held next Thursday from 10 am.
The mandatory round of contacts with all the groups began at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. In it, Illa assured that he had the support of 68 deputies, the absolute majority of the Parliament, a statement that was confirmed to Rull by the delegations of ERC and Comuns. With the formal proposal, the head of the Chamber takes the last step within his powers to leave Illa ready to submit to the majority of the hemicycle.
From now on, all that remains to be confirmed is the date of this plenary session, which Rull himself proposed to be held next Thursday, August 8. It will be the Permanent Deputation –where PSC, ERC and Comuns have a majority– who will end up setting this investiture plenary session, although it will be a simple formality.
There is less certainty about whether this plenary session will be held and under what terms. Junts confirmed this Tuesday that, as eldiario.es had anticipated, its intention is to demand the suspension of the investiture debate if Carles Puigdemont is arrested and cannot attend the Parliament.
The plans of the party that will lead the opposition in this legislature include suspending the plenary session with no deadline for resuming it, an idea that the coalition formed around Illa rejects.
