A survey by YouGov/Cato has evaluated the opinion of the US on various political matters, including the preference for capitalist, socialist or communist systems. Although most of the US population has a favorable view of capitalism (59%) and unfavorable socialism (57%) – especially communism (86%) – some groups in the country are changing this balance.

For example, those who have been self-controlled Democrats have a more positive view of socialism (67%) than capitalism (50%). Convinced liberals – and here take into account how US divides the policy between liberals and conservatives – lead this trend: 82% have a favorable opinion on socialism, against only 28% who feel positive about capitalism. The most surprising fact is that from the US under 30 years old, 62% have a favorable view of socialism, and 50% see capitalism in a positive way.

Only 14% of Americans have a favorable view of communism, while 86% have an unfavorable view. However, the following groups show greater sympathy for communism:

  • 34% of children under 30;
  • 29% of convinced liberals;
  • 28% of residents of large cities;
  • 26% of African Americans.

Even so, the “American Way of Life” still didn’t seem to get out of the American minds. The research showed that the majority of the US population has favorable feelings regarding the rich and the process of enrichment:

  • 54% say they feel more admiration than resentment (46%) compared to the rich.
  • 9 out of 10 Americans say that “there is nothing wrong with trying to make as many money as honestly.”
  • 62% agree that everyone benefits when people get rich because they “invest their money in new businesses that create jobs and new technologies.”
  • 71% disagree of the idea that “it is immoral to allow people to become billionaires.”
