During Russia’s BRICS presidency in 2024, President Vladimir Putin affirmed Russia’s commitment to the expansion of the bloc and the rapid integration of new members.
In a speech during the 14th Meeting of the High Representatives of BRICS and BRICS+ on Security Issues, held in St. Petersburg, Putin declared that the integration of new countries has been a priority.
“Our presidency has focused on expanding and strengthening BRICS,” he said.
According to Putin, the Russian presidency’s work plan has already achieved more than 70% of its goals, with around 150 events being held, including meetings, forums and ministerial meetings.
“To date, more than three dozen countries, 34 to be exact, have already declared their desire to participate in the activities of our association,” he highlighted.
The president also mentioned the focus on security issues. He highlighted progress in combating cybercrime and terrorism, and announced that the creation of a BRICS Council for Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Money Laundering is in the final stages.
“This is a crucial step to further strengthen our cooperation on global security issues,” Putin said.
The actions of the Russian presidency were seen as part of the growing role of BRICS on the international stage, attracting the interest of other nations in joining the group.
