The Global Sumud Flotilla is the largest solidarity fleet with Palestine organized to date, gathering dozens of boats in a mission that directly challenges the humanitarian block imposed by Israel against the population of Gaza, at the service of the extermination and ethnic cleaning project that has been radically accentuated in the new phase of the colonialist offensive after October 2023.

This August 31 at 3 pm will start from Barcelona and September 4 from Tunisia. According to the organization, the journey could last between seven and eight days until reaching the Palestinian coast.

Around 300 activists from 44 countries will travel aboard the different vessels. Among the personalities that add to this mission are Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, both also part of the previous flotilla with the Madleen ship.

The expectation is maximum in the Barcelona port, where dozens of media cover the press conference prior to the departure, with interventions by Greta Thunberg, Eduard Fernández and Thiago Saif, among others.

Greta Thunberg has declared that “the Palestinians have been claiming their rights decades, and more and more people understand the atrocities committed by Israel. It is a genocide.” And that “this is not only our mission, but of Palestine, how basic rights are taken away and silenced.”

For his part, the Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek said: “We are not heroes, we are part of a social movement that fights Israel’s crimes. Thanks to Barcelona, which has become a reference of support against genocide.”

Mission objectives

The Sumud Global Flotilla is a coalition that brings together coordinators, organizers and participants of the Freedom Flotilla, the Sumud Flotilla of the Maghreb, the convoy Sumud Nusantara and the global movement for Gaza, together with other international organizations that fight in defense of the Palestinian people, to face and break the illegal siege imposed by Israel in Gaza.

The global movement for Gaza, previously known as Gazo Gazo, began as a great mobilization of thousands of people around the world with the aim of walking to the Egyptian Egyptian border with Gaza, in Rafah. He charged even more impulse after the kidnapping of the activists aboard the Madleen. Despite the persecution by the Egyptian government, the movement was a great expression of international solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

It is not just about delivering humanitarian aid. The mission is a non -violent action that seeks to open a humanitarian corridor led by global civil society. By gathering activists, doctors, jurists, journalists and artists from dozens of countries, the flotilla denounces the silence and complicity of international powers against the ongoing genocide.

Arrival of the ships and previous activities in the port

The first vessels of the fleet arrived on the port of Barcelona this Saturday, being received with applause and support chants by the crowd congregated on the dock in defense of the people of Palestine.

Since Friday, the Moll de la Fusta has become a political, cultural and claiming point. Concerts, workshops and talks have accompanied the days before the exit, with the aim of making visible the situation in the Gaza Strip and denouncing the blockade imposed by Israel.
