Today, January 26th, at 11 am, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a telephone conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. Over the course of fifty minutes, the two leaders addressed topics related to the bilateral relationship and the global agenda.
The presidents exchanged information on economic indicators of the two countries, which point to good prospects for both economies. President Trump stated that the economic growth of the United States and Brazil is positive for the region as a whole.
Both welcomed the good relationship built in recent months, which resulted in the lifting of a significant part of the tariffs applied to Brazilian products.
President Lula reiterated a proposal, sent to the State Department in December, to strengthen cooperation in the fight against organized crime. Lula expressed interest in strengthening the partnership in repressing money laundering and arms trafficking, as well as freezing the assets of criminal groups and exchanging data on financial transactions. The proposal was well received by the North American president.
When commenting on the invitation made to Brazil to participate in the Peace Council, Lula proposed that the body presented by the United States be limited to the issue of Gaza and provide a seat for Palestine. In this context, he reiterated the importance of a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, which includes the expansion of the permanent members of the Security Council.
During the conversation, Lula and Trump exchanged views on the situation in Venezuela. The Brazilian president highlighted the importance of preserving peace and stability in the region and working for the well-being of the Venezuelan people.
The two presidents agreed that President Lula would visit Washington after the Brazilian’s trip to India and South Korea in February, on a date to be set soon.
