The popular crypto wallet MetaMask now also supports Bitcoin. Users of the wallet can now buy, send, receive and exchange Bitcoin directly within the same app. MetaMask is thus taking the next step in expanding its services, which until recently were mainly focused on Ethereum.
Greater role for multichain wallets
The addition comes ten months after MetaMask first announced plans for Bitcoin support. Until now, users could only work with Bitcoin indirectly through so-called ‘wrapped’ variants of the coin, which run on other blockchains. The new update allows direct interaction with the Bitcoin network.
MetaMask started out as a wallet for Ethereum and related networks, but is quickly expanding its reach this year. Integrations were previously added for Solana, Sei and Monad. With the arrival of Bitcoin, MetaMask focuses more specifically on users who want to use multiple blockchains at the same time, without needing different apps.
According to MetaMask, Bitcoin transactions will become visible once they are confirmed on the network. The company points out that transactions on the Bitcoin network are generally slower than on many other blockchains.
Incentive for use
To encourage the use of Bitcoin within the wallet, MetaMask rewards users who exchange other crypto coins for Bitcoin with so-called reward points. The company has not yet announced how exactly these rewards can be used.
MetaMask says that the integration of Bitcoin is part of a broader strategy to become a fully-fledged multichain wallet. The company hints that even more blockchains will be added in 2026.
With the support of Bitcoin, MetaMask responds to the growing demand for simplicity and overview in the crypto market, where more and more users are active on multiple networks at the same time.
It is interesting to see that a wallet that once started as an Ethereum project is now also making the transition to Bitcoin. More and more parties realize that Bitcoin is the greatest security in the crypto world.
