An unexpected collaboration between PayPal and ChatGPT sets the tone at the fair today. By integrating the payment service into the popular AI chatbot, online shopping takes on a completely new form. Investors are responding enthusiastically.

PayPal becomes the first payment option in ChatGPT

According to a press release, PayPal will be the first digital wallet to be fully integrated into ChatGPT. Users will soon be able to not only ask for advice about products via the chatbot, but also pay directly with the “Buy with PayPal” button.

The full launch is planned for early 2026. Users can then count on familiar features such as buyer protection and dispute assistance.

But it also works the other way around. Millions of web shops and brands get direct access to ChatGPT via the new Agentic Commerce Protocol. They don’t have to build a separate integration; products are automatically linked to the AI platform.

AI will be core to PayPal’s strategy

The collaboration goes beyond e-commerce. Internally, more than 24,000 PayPal employees will have access to ChatGPT Enterprise. Developers will also work with OpenAI’s Codex, an AI tool that generates and optimizes code.

According to CEO Alex Chriss, the collaboration fits perfectly with the company’s vision for the future: “Hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT and PayPal. By joining forces, we make it possible to go from conversation to payment with just a few clicks.”

With this step, PayPal positions itself as the digital backbone of what it calls “agentic AI commerce” – a new way of online shopping in which AI searches, compares and even buys products on behalf of the user.

Investors are responding enthusiastically

The market reacts euphorically to the news. In the premarket, the PayPal price rose by 9.11 percent to $76.50. The share briefly even peaked at $82.23 – an increase of almost 17 percent.

This is striking, given that the share was still under significant pressure earlier this month after geopolitical tensions and a looming trade conflict between Trump and China. The AI deal now seems to partly make up for that loss.
