Nissan Motor decided to stop negotiations with Honda Motor for a merger between the two automakers, said the Nikkei newspaper on Wednesday, 7. The agreement provided for the creation of joint holding in 2026, with the aim of strengthening global competitiveness of companies.

The negotiations lasted seven weeks, but did not advance due to divergences between the parties, according to sources cited by Nikkei. The end of negotiations ends a possibility of significant restructuring in the Japanese automotive sector.

In response to the information, the Tokyo Stock Exchange suspended the negotiation of Nissan’s actions. Honda’s papers were up to 12%, while Nissan fell 6.4%.

Warrants of the automakers stated that the report is not based on official communications of both and that a structure for ongoing negotiations will be announced according to the schedule, despite a prior postponement in February.

Media reports indicate that Honda proposed a complete acquisition of Nissan, an idea that found strong internal resistance in the company.

Since the first disclosure of the agreement in December, Honda has positioned itself as the strongest part, having a market value more than four times higher than Nissan’s. The automaker also conditioned any transaction to the implementation of a restructuring plan by Nissan.
