An analysis of the New York Times shows that many were killed by Israeli bombings and friendly fire during military operations after Netanyahu refused to reach a ceasefire with Hamas to end the war.
Of the 251 Israeli soldiers and civilians taken by Hamas to Gaza on October 7, 2023, 41 were killed, including many for Israeli bombings and friendly fire, according to an analysis of The New York Times (NYT) published March 8.
NYT analyzed forensic reports and military investigations into their deaths, as well as interviews with more than a dozen soldiers and Israeli authorities, a high regional official and seven prisoner relatives.
Of the 59 prisoners still maintained by Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza, the government of Israel said that only 24 remain alive. One hundred and thirty others were released alive, while the bodies of another 40 were returned to Israel in exchange for the release of hundreds of prisoners and Palestinian detainees after ceasefire agreements in November 2023 and January this year.
Many died from the preference of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to continue his genocidal war in Gaza, who killed more than 50,000 Palestinians, most women and children, rather than reaching an agreement for the permanent end of the war.
“We could have brought more hostages home – before and for a lower price,” said Yoav Gallant, Israeli Defense Minister until November, in a televised interview last month.
“Only continuous military pressure, until the total victory, will bring the release of all our hostages,” said Netanyahu last year.
The Israeli media reported several times since the beginning of the war that Netanyahu was committed to sabotaging an agreement that would end the war and bring the Israeli prisoners home. Netanyahu and members of their government coalition wish to expel the more than 2 million residents of Gaza, attach the track and build Jewish settlements on the ruins of the Palestinians destroyed houses.
The NYT reports that seven prisoners were executed by their captors when Israeli soldiers approached during military operations, and four others died in Israeli air strikes, according to Israeli authorities and public investigations public conclusions.
Three prisoners were killed by Israeli soldiers who confused them with Palestinian resistance combatants, the Israeli military said. A prisoner was shot dead in cross fire during military operations. The NYT says the circumstances surrounding the deaths of another 26 remain inconclusive.
In a prominent case, Ron Sherman’s mother, an Israeli prisoner hostage by Hamas on October 7, said the Israeli military deliberately killed her son.
The army recovered the body of Ron and the bodies of two other prisoners of a tunnel in Gaza on December 14. Israel claimed that Hamas had murdered all three.
But in a Facebook post, Maayan Sherman said his son “was indeed murdered… [Mas] Not for Hamas… not an accidental shot, not the crossfire. It was premeditated murder. Pumps with poisonous gases… They found that Ron also had several crushed fingers, apparently due to their desperate attempts to get out of the poison grave. ”
Maayan alleged after he was presented as a possibility by an army delegation who visited his home. The delegation included soldiers from the 551st brigade that recovered Ron’s body. During the visit, the results of the pathological report were presented to the family.
“The members of the delegation told us that they do not rule out gas poisoning due to IDF bombings, but they are not sure and do not know the cause of death,” she said.
An indication that Ron was killed by poison gas is that when his body was found, “there were no fractures, no bullet injuries, not even dry blows,” Maayan said. However, it was told that “the matter is closed” and that the army would no longer investigate the matter.
