Nepalese Prime Minister Sharma Oli announced his resignation on Tuesday after a wave of protests against corruption led by the country’s “generation Z”.

Considered the greatest instability that Nepal has seen in its recent history, after the abolition of its 239 -year -old monarchy in 2008, the demonstrations were violent and brutally repressed. To contain the rebels, security forces used real ammunition, water cannons and tear gas during protests in several cities, in which authorities said at least 19 people were killed.

Reuters photos showed protesters burning a police guardhouse and furniture in front of the Nepalese Congress office, Nepal’s largest political party. Fire was also set in Parliament, in the homes of ministers and the Supreme Court.

More than 400 people, including security forces officials, were hospitalized after injury on Monday, according to a Nepal Ministry of Health report.

The trigger for the beginning of the mass movement was the ban -imposed ban on social networking platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Youtube and X, as it was widely criticized by human rights groups.

The organizers say the protests, which have spread across the country, are not only about the ban on social media, but they are also a reflection of frustration with unstable economy and increasingly breaking endemic corruption levels.

While children of politicians squander their luxurious lives on networks, the so -called “Nepo Kids”, 15 to 24 -year -old, lived with an unemployment rate of 20.8% in 2024, according to the World Bank.

“All Nepalese citizens are fed up with corruption. All young people are going out of the country. So we want to protect our young people and improve the country’s economy,” a protester told Reuters.
