This week it looked for a while as if the Nasdaq, a major American stock exchange for tech companies, had launched its own memecoin. Of course, this sounds way too crazy to be true, and it was. The official X account had been hacked. Still, there were plenty of crypto enthusiasts who fell for it, as the value of the coin rose to as much as $80 million.
‘It’s stonks time’
The Nasdaq stock exchange’s X account was taken over this week by hackers who used it to market a new memecoin called ‘STONKS’. The hackers added a fake account as a partner of Nasdaq and used the official X account to retweet the messages from the fake account.
If you use your common sense, you will immediately see that this is a scam of the highest order. But with the reputation of the Nasdaq, plenty of people have still been lured into the trap.
The price of the STONKS memecoin skyrocketed by thousands of percent in just a few hours. At its peak, the scam was valued at $80 million. But it soon became clear that it was a hack, and so the price collapsed like a house of cards.
It is certainly not the first time that a social media channel has been hacked and promoted a fake cryptocurrency. For example, a few months ago the X account of world-famous rapper Wiz Khalifa was hacked to advertise a fraudulent memecoin.
The biggest lesson? Don’t just put your money into anything, and always do research first.

Last Friday, just about everyone in the crypto world also thought Donald Trump had been hacked when he wrote that he had launched his own TRUMP memecoin, just days before he was to be inaugurated as President of the United States.
