In a lawsuit against Elon Musk by the state of New Mexico, the White House clarified on Monday that the billionaire, although acting as a counselor close to President Donald Trump, has no formal or real authority to make government decisions.
The information was provided in a document signed by Joshua Fisher, director of the White House Administration office.
Fisher’s statement, issued as part of the United States Government defense, explains that Musk, Tesla’s executive president, does not occupy an executive position within the United States government, especially in the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) or in the organization Temporary of the Doge service.
The document states that the entrepreneur acts as the president’s advisor, being responsible for providing guidelines and suggestions, but without independent decision -making power.
“Musk is not an employee of the US Government Efficiency Department of the United States or any other Doge -associated unit. He does not hold the position of administrator of the Doge Service, ”says the official text.
The clarification aims to detail Musk’s position in the government, especially after speculation about its role in the policy of reducing costs and cuts in the federal government.
The statement occurs amid a judicial process initiated in New Mexico, in which the state questions Musk’s involvement in public management policies implemented by Trump.
The White House reiterated that the billionaire has focused on advising the president, but without the ability to directly implement or modify government policies.
Since taking office, Donald Trump has adopted an aggressive stance on spending cutting and restructuring federal agencies, an action that has gained strength with the appointment of Musk to lead government efficiency initiatives. Trump’s administration set out to review federal spending and cut programs considered unnecessary.
As part of this review, Musk, known for his leadership at Tesla and Spacex, was assigned to the analysis and implementation of a series of budget adjustments, including the elimination of jobs in non -essential areas.
Although Musk has been appointed to lead these review efforts, the White House made a point of clarifying that its function does not include the authority to make changes alone. The absence of decision-making power was highlighted to minimize possible misunderstandings about the billionaire’s role in government changes, especially in a context in which Trump’s decisions have often been contested and analyzed under a critical lens.
The Department of Government Efficiency, created to review the structure of the federal government, became a central theme at the beginning of Trump’s second term, with several agencies being restructured or extinct. The focus on cost cutting has generated discussions about the social and economic impacts of these actions, with critics questioning the feasibility of a leaner government.
In addition to his position at Tesla, Musk has been seen as an influential figure in other sectors, with a direct impact on various technological and economic policies.
Its connection with the Trump government has been a point of interest, especially in relation to its ideas on efficiency, technological innovation and the need for a more agile approach to public administration.
However, the statement made by the White House underlines the distinction between its function of counselor and autonomy in government decisions.
Despite his proximity to the president, Musk does not have the power to make decisions independently, making it clear that he acts within a more limited counseling context.
The clarification arises at a time when the Trump administration is being increasingly vigilant about the reforms it has been implementing.
Musk’s work structure within the federal government, although important for strategic guidance, is therefore defined as limited with regard to policy execution.
Thus, any cost cutting action or reformulation of government programs remains a prerogative of the president and his team of advisers, with Musk acting only as one of the counselors.
The judicial case in New Mexico is still underway and can bring more details about the state’s allegations, which questions the validity and nature of the functions performed by Musk in his collaboration with the federal government.
For now, the White House stresses that Musk’s presence in Trump administration is restricted to the role of counselor, without formal power on agencies or public policy decisions.
