For the first time since October 26, the ruling party Freedom Advances suffered two major setbacks this week. Emboldened by its unexpected electoral victory, which it achieved thanks to the rescue of Donald Trump, the government launched a bold times war plan and it was proposed to approve in record time, with the new composition of the National Congress, the 2026 Budget, the labor reform, the tax reform and a tightening of penalties. The objective is clear: use their political capital to turn the country in favor of the powerful in a few months. More submission to the United States, more adjustment to pay the debt, extractivism and a new norm that under the euphemism of “modernization” seeks to advance plans for labor slavery.
Forcing the march, in an overinterpretation of an electoral result that gave him a political victory but not hegemony to advance his plans as if he had a blank check, Freedom Advances stumbled over a first stone this Wednesday: its regulatory maneuvers were not enough and that is how the Chamber of Deputies generally approved the 2026 budget but, surprisingly, two hours later, The government suffered a defeat and the entire chapter that contained the repeal of the disability emergency and university financing fell.. The purchase of votes through ATN and other perks and businesses proved insufficient in the face of two causes that had been won through the struggle. It was enough for the ruling party to have the support of the PRO, the UCR, the Peronist governors of Catamarca and Tucumán, the provincial mandates of Misiones and Salta centered on Federal Innovation, Santa Cruz, Neuquén and San Juan for the vote in general, but it lost a key vote in particular.
Immediately, a government crisis that began to consider from the unprecedented possibility of the government itself vetoing its own budget, to renegotiating changes from the Senate, but starting from an unforeseen situation. At the time of closing this note, the possibility of the Upper House discussing the issue on the 26th is being discussed. That day we must be in the streets against the adjustment budget and possible maneuvers to reinstate the attacks on Disability and the University.
At the same time as this debate, the Labor commission chaired by Patricia Bullrich which ended in a failure of the attempt to make an express treatment of the labor reform between Christmas and New Year. In the afternoon, the senator and former minister had to announce that a ruling will be issued but the treatment at the facility will take place in February.
These doubts at the heights reflect, on the one hand, the existence of some questions regarding a key issue that Trumpism had demanded of Milei: that he articulate alliances and that the government really have the political volume to advance with its plans. On the other hand, the difficulties of imposing without crisis and struggles an economic program that favors a few sectors and leaves out a large part of the country, even more so in a context of low consumption and many sectors of the economy hit by recession and economic opening, while inflation, instead of going down, accelerates even a few decimals and the BCRA reserves remain in negative territory.
This context was extremely conducive to a forceful measure that would bring into play all the strength of the working class.paralyzing the country with an active general strike, mobilizing hundreds of thousands towards the National Congress that is debating the attacks.
However, the “new” leadership of the CGT debuted with a lukewarm measure, without a national strike and a mobilization of just a few thousand to Plaza de Mayo. Very far from what the working class can do. In the Plaza de Mayo speeches they barely announced a plan of struggle and possible strike “if they are not listened to.” Abstract words without any serious commitment in the face of a situation that is increasingly urgent.
That is why the left and the combative unionism, which had been the first to announce a mobilization, before the CGT, participated in the day with an independent column to demand an active national strike with mobilization on the day that the labor reform is discussed in Congress and that it is the beginning of a plan of struggle, on the path of the general strike until defeating all of Milei’s plans and the great economic power.
It will also be necessary to mobilize against the 2026 Budget if it is discussed in the coming days in the Senate.
Just as in December 2017 we stopped Mauricio Macri’s permanent reformism in the streets, this time we have to return to the same path.
