During the recent G20 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, a moment captured on video and shared by Argentine President Javier Milei illustrated a remarkably distant interaction with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The video, which Milei posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account, was accompanied by the caption: “Better keep the leftists and communists away.” The recording also shows Milei in more effusive interactions with former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
President Lula, who served as host of the summit at the Museum of Modern Art, had warm meetings with other global leaders such as Joe Biden of the United States, Xi Jinping of China and Emmanuel Macron of France. In contrast, the meeting with Milei was marked by a more reserved cordiality.
The reaction on social media was immediate, with followers of both leaders interpreting the gesture as a reflection of political differences between the two countries.
Despite the provocative tone on his networks, Milei also highlighted a significant advance in bilateral relations during the summit. Brazil and Argentina signed a historic agreement to export natural gas from the Vaca Muerta deposit to the Brazilian market.
The initial agreement provides for the purchase of 2 million cubic meters of gas per day by Brazil, with an expected increase to 10 million m³/day in the next three years and 30 million m³/day by 2030.
This pact, celebrated on social media by Milei and his team, is seen as a crucial step towards strengthening the energy security of both countries, underlining the capacity for cooperation in strategic areas, even in the face of political tensions.
