NewSan is in the news again. This time, due to the dismissal of more than 150 metallurgists from its Ushuaia plant. The layoffs included effective, temporary and even workers who were on medical leave or vacation. They were without cause and without prior notice.
“They informed us of the dismissal by message. Many colleagues with more than a decade at the plant were left on the street from one day to the next,” they told Fuegian media.
Although in reality there are causes behind this attack. After winning the elections, in the case of Tierra del Fuego due to the dispersion and erosion of the opposition, Milei is “emboldened” to carry out his attacks. One of them, let us remember, is the removal of tariffs on electronic imports. This measure led to a historic strike in May of this year, which involved more than 10,000 metalworkers but also had enormous social support.
Although NewSan preferred to remain somewhat cautious about the possibility of a new workers’ reaction, it now took advantage of the government’s situation to attack. The visit that Milei made to the plant during the campaign was a preview of that anti-worker alliance. When he was on the island, he assured that the company was “an example of efficiency and competitiveness for the country’s industrial future.”
Is the company in crisis? Not at all, he has not stopped earning and that he gains from the promotion sub-regime he has diversified his businesses: he bought Procter & Gamble businesses, he exports fish and peanuts, they have agro-industrial businesses and other metallurgical plants. The first quarter of this year obtained a net profit of $26,214 million.
Luis Galli, the CEO of NewSan who received Milei during his visit, had been brutal when asked about the consequences of the liberalization of imports: “we adapt, as appropriate we import or export, but we have to see what happens to those people…”. It is shown in the documentary “Strike at the end of the world” by The Daily Left which you can see here.
Well, it is now clear what Cherñajovsky’s plan is for “those people”: leave them on the street, discard them.
That is the “industrial future” imagined by the government and the owners of the island, joined by Caputo (Mirgor) and Garfunkel (BGH).
To do?
The layoffs, as well as those that Mirgor made in these weeks at IATEC (cell phones) and other plants, are part of an advance against the agreement that closed the May strike. At that time, it was decided to lift the measure, with the commitment to guarantee jobs (effective and contracted) until December, with a dialogue table where the issue of tariffs and job continuity would be discussed. Companies continue to break “social peace.”
On the other side, the UOM Ushuaia, led by Carlos “Colo” Tapia, has not faced the attack. He has not even publicly denounced it. Neither has the national leadership of the union, Abel Furlán.
As for the Fuegian government, which participated in the negotiations, it does nothing either. Governor Gustavo Melella (Fuerza Patria) does not make waves.
You cannot reach the end of the agreement without hitting back. Each attack, devious and illegal, should be responded to with the strength that the May strike showed. We demand the reinstatement of all those fired at NewSan and the rest of the companies.
The opposition unions in the region, such as the UOM Río Grande itself and its bodies of delegates, teachers and the state, could call for unity in the streets against all these adjustments, which are accompanied by labor reform and salary theft. Without a doubt it would be accompanied by thousands looking for a space to organize and resist.
