On Friday morning, major US airlines including American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines suspended operations, citing communication issues.

The move was taken shortly after Microsoft announced the resolution of a flaw in its cloud services, which had already impacted several low-cost airlines.

The link between the flight suspension and the previous issue with Microsoft’s cloud has not yet been confirmed.

In addition to the major airlines, Allegiant Air also suspended its flights, according to the company itself. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not yet issued a comment on the incident.

Low-cost carriers such as Frontier Airlines, Allegiant and SunCountry have faced previous disruptions that have compromised their operations.

Frontier, specifically, said it was resuming normal operations after a “major Microsoft technical outage” temporarily impacted its operations.

SunCountry, meanwhile, faced issues with its reservation and check-in system due to an unidentified third-party vendor.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the department is paying close attention to the cancellation and delay issues, especially with Frontier, and stressed the need for all airlines to live up to their responsibilities to passengers.

Allegiant reported that its website was down due to a problem with Microsoft Azure, as reported to CNN. However, it did not immediately respond to Reuters’ comment.

According to data from FlightAware, Frontier canceled 147 flights and delayed 212 others on Thursday, while Allegiant had delays on 45% of its aircraft and Sun Country delayed 23% of its flights.

Microsoft confirmed that the outage began around 6 p.m. on Thursday, affecting a subset of its customers with issues across multiple Azure services in the Central US region, and is investigating an issue affecting multiple Microsoft 365 applications and services.
