Meta’s Threads Celebrates 1st Birthday – How’s Twitter’s Challenger Doing?

Despite Meta’s Threads now reaching 175 million monthly active users, it’s still too early to say we have a serious challenger to Twitter (or X). It was Mark Zuckerberg who personally announced this milestone on the platform.

Threads started with a lead

Meta’s Threads obviously started with a head start, as it tried to attract a lot of people to the app through Instagram.

At first, the number of active users exploded, then went into a slump. Now we’ve seen several months of solid growth in a row, which should bode well for Mark Zuckerberg, Meta, and of course Threads.

In June 2024, traffic to the Threads website was 9% higher than in the launch month of July 2023. While this means the app is starting to attract serious traffic, it still can’t compete with Elon Musk’s Twitter.

9x less visitors than Twitter

Despite Threads’ impressive numbers, Zuckerberg’s platform attracts about 9x less traffic than Elon Musk’s Twitter.

Based on SimilarWeb’s data, it looks like X has about 9x the monthly usage of Threads right now.

So we can say that Twitter users are at least a lot more active than those on Threads. People sometimes look at Threads, but Twitter is more of an app that people open daily for news or other things.

The crypto community remains loyal to Twitter, at least. Of course, it’s also hard to convince hordes of people to take their conversations elsewhere. Especially when a platform doesn’t offer any significant improvements.
