Partnership signed in Lisbon foresees annual production of up to 5 million canned goods and technology transfer to strengthen the local food industry

The mayor of Maricá, Washington Quaquá, signed this Thursday (26/02) a cooperation agreement with the Fábrica de Conservas de Murtosa (Comur), a traditional Portuguese fish industry, to implement a canned food production project using Brazilian species in the municipality. The estimate is that up to 5 million units will be produced per year, based on the industrial model adopted in Portugal.

“It’s the fishing economy leaving Maricá to the world. We’re going to sell these beautiful cans of Maricaense fish everywhere! Much more than an ingredient, this product is a souvenir, a work of art that arrives in the homes of those who visit our stores, offering very high quality. We are putting our city on the world map, generating jobs and income for families”, said Mayor Washington Quaquá.

The agreement was signed during the 36th edition of Better Tourism Lisbon Travel Market (BTL), in Lisbon. The initiative foresees the transfer of technology, innovation and industrial know-how from the Portuguese group to structure a new front in the food industry in the municipality.

Among the products planned are typical Brazilian species, such as pirarucu and tucunaré, as well as mussels and tilapia. The proposal is to add value to national production with international standard industrial processing. The packaging will also be personalized with cultural and tourist references from Maricá.

“This partnership shows the success of the policy of developing the economy of people and families, defended by Mayor Washington Quaquá. The new industry will benefit the city’s fish and generate more than 150 direct jobs, mostly for women whose families are linked to artisanal fishing. Maricá’s fish will reach the tables of Brazil and the world in a product with high added value”, explained the president of Companhia Maricá Alimentos (Amar), Marlos Costa.

The project envisages the creation of a mixed company with the Portuguese group and aims to strengthen the fish production chain, generate employment and income and increase municipal revenue. The goal is to expand the business to other markets in Brazil.

“Before an embassy arrives in a country, products like this arrive, music, cinema. This is an important moment for Maricá within a space as noble as this fair”, stated the president of Maricá, Arte, Roteiros e Experiencias (MARÉ), Antônio Grassi.
