Brazilian president claims that military operation violates international law and weakens the multilateral order built in the post-war period

In a scenario of growing geopolitical tension in Latin America, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva used his social networks this Saturday morning (3) to express his vehement rejection of the military operation conducted by the United States on Venezuelan soil. The action, which culminated in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores, was classified by the Brazilian leader as an unacceptable breach of the norms that govern coexistence between nations.

Brasília’s position reinforces the Brazilian diplomatic tradition of defending people’s self-determination, especially at a time when regional sovereignty seems to be put into question by large-scale external interventions.

An affront to sovereignty and international law
For the Brazilian government, the episode does not just represent an isolated attack on a neighboring country, but a direct threat to the multilateral justice system. Lula highlighted that the use of military force violates international agreements and rescues ghosts from a past of authoritarian interference on the continent.

In his statement, the president emphasized the gravity of the moment:

“The bombings on Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president cross an unacceptable line. These acts represent a very serious affront to Venezuela’s sovereignty and another extremely dangerous precedent for the entire international community. Attacking countries, in flagrant violation of international law, is the first step towards a world of violence, chaos and instability, where the law of the strongest prevails over multilateralism.”

The tone adopted by Lula reflects a historical concern on the Latin American left with preserving peace and protecting against foreign policies based on military coercion, which have historically destabilized democracies and economies in the region.

The role of the UN and the risk of regional instability
In addition to condemning the offensive, the Brazilian president directed a direct charge to the United Nations. For Planalto, the omission or lack of a suitable response could signal the end of diplomatic mediation as a tool for resolving conflicts. Lula reiterated that Brazil maintains a consistent stance with its past decisions, regardless of the geographic scenario.

“The condemnation of the use of force is consistent with the position that Brazil has always adopted in recent situations in other countries and regions. The action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace. The international community, through the United Nations, needs to respond vigorously to this episode. Brazil condemns these actions and remains available to promote the path of dialogue and cooperation”, pointed out the president.

The search for dialogue in the midst of chaos
The note issued by the Brazilian government ends with a reaffirmation of the commitment to peace. While global powers resort to military power, Brazil tries to position itself as a necessary mediator, suggesting that the path to resolving the Venezuelan crisis must be followed through political understanding and not through the bombing of capitals and kidnapping of elected leaders.

The case now awaits developments at UN headquarters in New York, as Latin America cautiously observes the return of intervention tactics that many expected to have remained in the last century.
