President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) said on Monday, 5, that the Brics Block, made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and other developing countries, can play a central role in building a new international order.

The statements were made in an interview with Chinese journalists, in anticipation of Lula’s next official visit to China.

During the interview, excerpts from which they were released on social networks, the Brazilian president defended the importance of cooperation between the bloc countries to strengthen multilateralism and the promotion of a more equitable development model.

“Beside the BRICS, Brazil can much more,” he said.

According to Lula, the joint action of the group’s member countries allows their economies to influence global directions in different dimensions. “Brics is another important place for us to sign the planet of what we want,” he added.

Lula argued that the current international scenario requires coordinated efforts in favor of peace, stability and development. For him, it is necessary to rescue values that promote adequate living conditions for populations around the world.

“All this to assure the people of the planet to live in decent conditions,” he said.

The president reinforced the idea that these goals do not belong to a single country, but must be shared by all nations.

“We need to be educated so that we take care of the things we do, respecting that the world is not from Brazil, not from China, not from the Americans; the world is almost 9 billion human beings who inhabit the planet and who have the right to live decently well,” he said.

The interview also addressed the theme of international trade. The president criticized the imbalance in global trade and defended changes in the rules to make the system fairer for all countries.

According to him, it is necessary to establish conditions in which all participants can benefit proportionally.

“What we want is that commerce is fair, balanced and that everyone can sell and buy equitably, because commerce has to be a two -handed highway. It has to have a certain balance. And if it has a certain balance, it will be fair,” he said.

The president argued that an effective transformation in this model of trade will only be possible if the Global Southern countries act in a coordinated manner.

He reiterated that, although Brazil has autonomous ability, articulation with other developing countries strengthens its position in international debates.

“Brazil alone can be a lot, but Brazil along with China, with India, South Africa and with the other countries that make up the BRICS, is much stronger. We can much more,” he concluded.

Lula’s visit to China occurs in a context of diplomatic rapprochement and intensification of the bilateral cooperation agenda. The Brazilian government has sought to strengthen relations with BRICS countries, prioritizing strategic partnerships in areas such as trade, technology, environment and infrastructure.

Brazil’s performance at BRICS is seen by the government as part of a more diverse international insertion strategy, focusing on the expansion of markets, the reduction of global asymmetries and the appreciation of multilateral spaces outside the traditional axis of the great Western powers.

The block, created in 2009, has sought to expand its influence on international forums and consolidate an alternative development agenda for emerging countries.

No details have been released on Lula’s official commitments during his stay in China, but the president is expected to attend meetings with local authorities and representatives of the business sector, as well as meetings focused on technical cooperation and investments.
