The Brazilian government, led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, opted to take an observational stance after the announcement of Joe Biden’s resignation from his candidacy for re-election in the United States.
According to information received by the president through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and the special international advisor, Celso Amorim, there will be no public statements from Lula or Itamaraty about the decision, considered a matter of American domestic policy.
According to a report by Valoran official statement from Biden is expected in the coming days. Although Biden has expressed support for his vice president, Kamala Harris, to succeed him, the final decision will be made by the Democratic Party.
A source at Itamaraty expressed concern about the global political scenario, citing the strengthening of far-right movements, such as the candidacy of Donald Trump in the United States and similar figures in other regions, such as Argentine President Javier Milei.
These policy changes are especially concerning for Brazil, given the importance of sustainability and energy transition policies. Biden had pledged to donate $500 million to the Amazon Fund, with $97 million already released.
The next World Climate Summit, COP 30, will be held in Belém, Pará, in 2025, highlighting the relevance of these issues for Brazil and the global political scenario.
