President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) declared this Thursday, 15, that he does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the last elections in Venezuela.

During an interview with Rádio T, in Curitiba (PR), Lula suggested that the political crisis in the neighboring country could be resolved with the formation of a coalition government or, alternatively, with the calling of new elections.

“Not yet [reconhece Maduro como vitorioso]he knows that he owes an explanation to Brazilian society and to the world, he knows that”, stated the president.

Lula proposed some alternatives to resolve the impasse in Venezuela, including the formation of a coalition government involving different political groups.

“There are several options, or we can form a coalition government, a composition. Many people didn’t vote for me and I brought everyone into the government,” he said, emphasizing that he is seeking concrete results and does not want to act hastily.

The president also suggested the possibility of new elections in Venezuela, with guarantees of equal participation for all candidates and international monitoring.

“If he [Maduro] “If you have common sense, you could try to call on the people of Venezuela, perhaps even call for new elections, establish criteria for the participation of all candidates, create a non-partisan electoral committee so that everyone can participate and allow scouts to participate. What I cannot do is be hasty and make a decision. I want to respect the sovereignty of other countries,” declared Lula.

Lula’s visit to Paraná included appointments at a fertilizer factory, a refinery and the Renault factory. This is the second time the president has commented on the elections in Venezuela.

He had previously been criticized for saying he saw nothing abnormal in the Venezuelan situation, but in Thursday’s interview he sought to clarify that election day passed without suspicion.
