President says he will negotiate with wholesalers to curb the high price of food in Brazil and ensure that inflation does not harm consumers
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stressed the importance of adjusting the vocation of Brazil as a barn in the world with the need to ensure that the products cultivated in the country reach the table of Brazilians at prices compatible with the purchasing power of the population. In addition, he stated that this is one of the priorities of the federal government, aiming at both food security and the opening of new markets for Brazil. During an interview with Radio Tupi FMin Rio de Janeiro, on February 20, Lula detailed the actions being taken to achieve this goal.
First, the president stressed that Brazil became practically a “supermarket of the world”. However, he emphasized that it is essential to ensure that the products do not miss the Brazilian people. For this, the government plans to hold meetings with wholesalers. Thus, the goal is to discuss strategies to reduce food prices. According to Lula, “I’m sure we will be able to adjust prices to the purchasing power of the worker.”
In addition, the president made a specific reference to the price of eggs, which is temporarily above the standard. He also mentioned the adverse weather conditions faced in 2024, such as the recording heat, the intense droughts in some regions and the floods in productive areas, such as Rio Grande do Sul. On the other hand, Lula recalled that the price of meat has already begun to fall. In addition, he expressed optimism about the perspectives for the year, thanks to the expectation of records and the facilities created for family farming.
For example, the recently announced rural program aims to remedy sector debts and expand access to credit. At the same time, the president stressed that the federal government guaranteed tax exemption for the basic basket products in the tax reform approved by the National Congress. However, this measure will only begin to impact prices more directly from 2027.
In his words, Lula said: “Products will be more accessible, because food security is something we should take care of with love. She is the biggest weapon we have to face any situation. Therefore, people need to have access to cheap and quality coffee, cheap and quality lunch, and cheap and quality dinner. ”
In addition, the president cited other initiatives to help the population, such as public policies resumed and enhanced. Consequently, these efforts are generating positive economic indicators. With the economy growing more than 3% in the first two years of its term, the real increase in the minimum wage and more than 100 million people employed, the purchasing power of the worker is increasing. Finally, Lula concluded: “The year 2025 will be the year of the great harvest of this country. From the point of view of worker income growth and credit policy, we spent two years tidying up the country, restructuring and redoing laws. Now this growth will be passed on to workers with the increase in the minimum wage. This will greatly improve people’s lives. ”
Markets
In another strand to generate currency, the president cited the country’s reinsertion in the global geopolitical scenario as an essential factor for more than 300 new markets to be open to national products since the beginning of the term in 2023. Lula mentioned that he will visit Japan in the coming days and will pass vietnam, on scales with the potential to make these markets expand the interest in breaking fruit, fruits, Soy, corn, meat and coffee.
Zero deforestation
For the president, one of the differentials of this phase is that the expansion of production can be done without creating environmental problems and from the prospect of ensuring illegal deforestation by 2030 and reusing degraded lands for cultivation. “The world wants to eat and Brazil can serve food without deforesting anything. I promised we will have zero deforestation by 2030. This is a commitment. We are recovering 40 million hectares of degraded land. You can plant corn, beans, cotton and forests to make furniture. This country will become a highly developed country. ”
