Lula challenges powers in the G20, calls for more ambitious climate goals and proposes taxing multimillionaires to fight global hunger
President Lula (PT) opened the second day of the G20 this Tuesday (19) with a call for more action to slow global warming, highlighting that developed countries must accelerate their efforts to reduce harmful emissions.
Lula focused the session on environmental challenges, saying that rich nations should consider bringing forward their emissions reduction targets from 2050 to 2040 or 2045.
“The G20 is responsible for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Lula. “Even if we are not walking at the same speed, we can all take another step.”
During the summit, held at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, G20 leaders discussed changes in the world order, from increasing global tensions to transformations in the international political scene.
The agenda centered on efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.
European Union leaders also took the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit.
In a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to strengthening relations with China, highlighting that the two countries share views on promoting peace in Ukraine.
“The world we live in, as you just reminded us, is made of instabilities, tensions and growing wars. And I believe that we truly share a common vision when it comes to defending the United Nations Charter and promoting a peace agenda,” Macron told Jinping.
“We are on the 1,000th day of the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine, and I know that you share, like us, the desire for a lasting peace, respectful of the Charter of the United Nations, and that you share, like us, the same concern for the bellicose and escalating statements of Russia’s nuclear doctrine,” Macron added.
A joint statement signed by representatives of G20 countries on Monday night called for urgent humanitarian assistance and better protection of civilians affected by conflicts in the Middle East, as well as reaffirming the right of Palestinians to self-determination.
The declaration also included Brazil’s proposal to tax the income of billionaires at 2%, focused on ways to eradicate world hunger and committed to working towards a “transformative reform” of the UN Security Council.
