President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived in Mexico this Sunday (29) to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who will be the first woman to govern the country. The event is scheduled for October 1st.
This Monday (30), Lula will have bilateral meetings with the current president, López Obrador, and his successor. In addition, he will participate in a Brazil-Mexico business forum that will feature around 400 businesspeople.
This will be Lula’s third official visit to Mexico as president, having already been to the country during his previous terms, in 2003 and 2007.
The Secretary of Latin America and the Caribbean at Itamaraty, Gisela Padovan, highlighted the importance of relations between the two countries, pointing out convergences on relevant topics such as the environment, trade and global governance reform.
“This is a very promising moment for bilateral relations, given the convergence of views on various topics. The president-elect has a scientific background, specializing in climate science, so I believe that the environment will be a central theme to unite the two countries”, he stated.
Mexico is Brazil’s sixth largest trading partner and the fifth main destination for Brazilian exports. Between 2020 and 2023, trade between the two countries exceeded US$14 billion, representing a 15% growth compared to the period from 2020 to 2022. “Our trade is diversified and has high added value”, stated Gisela Padovan.
