Maduro, during his transfer to a federal prison in New York: “Happy New Year”


The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, was transferred this Saturday to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he will be held after arriving in Manhattan. The helicopter took off from a heliport in Manhattan heading to the detention center after the Venezuelan leader was processed in a federal facility linked to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), according to The New York Times and CNN.

Additionally, the official White House rapid response account has posted a video that appeared to show his arrest and transfer.

The Venezuelan president, formally accused in 2020 by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Southern District of New York, which this Saturday made public a substitute accusation in that same court, will face charges in federal court for narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States and crimes related to automatic weapons.

The next step in his case is expected to take place in the coming days before a federal judge in Manhattan.
