Chinese company sets record of 100 Gbps in laser transmission, surpassing Starlink and advancing in the race for high-resolution technologies and 6G standards

China has achieved a breakthrough in laser communications between satellites and the ground, which could pave the way for 6G technology and other applications such as ultra-high-resolution remote sensing and next-generation satellite positioning technologies.

Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co, owner of Jilin-1, the world’s largest commercial submeter remote sensing satellite constellation, said it achieved an image data transmission rate of 100 gigabits per second in tests carried out last weekend .

The feat — 10 times faster than the company’s previous record — was carried out between a ground station mounted on a truck and one of the 117 satellites that currently make up the Jilin-1 constellation, according to the company.

According to Wang Hanghang, the company’s head of laser communication ground station technology, this advancement puts Chang Guang Satellite ahead of Elon Musk’s Starlink system.
“Musk’s Starlink has unveiled its satellite-to-satellite laser communication system, but has not yet implemented satellite-to-ground laser communication. We think they may have the technology, but we have already started large-scale deployment,” he said.

“We plan to deploy these laser communication units on all satellites in the Jilin-1 constellation to improve their efficiency, with the aim of integrating 300 satellites by 2027.”
